Nizhny Novgorod
International Biennale of Environmental Art
of oneself and of Earth
Against the background of environmental anxiety, political separation, technological acceleration and increasing isolation from nature, the Biennale offers to turn to awareness of oneself as part of a large living world. Exhibition projects do not seek to be either an ecological manifesto or a form of escapism — through art they explore "liveliness" as an ecological, philosophical and cultural reality, restoring a person's sense of wonder, sensitivity and belonging.

— Roy Brand, Chief Curator of the Biennale
For us, the biennale has two equally important components. The first is a huge contribution to the development of the Nizhny Novgorod art scene: new opportunities for artists and institutions, new connections and inclusion in a large professional context. The second is international. Nizhny Novgorod is becoming a platform through which Russian contemporary art can speak to the world, and artists and curators from different countries can meet and work together. It is especially important today to preserve this space for professional and human dialogue.

— Oleg Berkovich, Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region
Today it is especially important for us to feel the absolute unity with the world, deep rootedness in the place in which we have existed for many centuries. Therefore, the Biennale will directly speak to the forces of nature, address the elements that connect human to the earth, introducing us to the mystery of life.

Yulia Aksenova, program director of the Biennale
It will be a much more assembled and concentrated product. We, as a production team, have done a lot of work on the bugs. We are grateful to the regional government and our partners for the fact that we have opportunities that we did not have the first time. We are already seeing big stars who have followed the curator; we are already seeing people with amazing projects. Of course, it will be very big, serious, and large-scale both as a spectacle and as a place to think and work with your head. For us, on the one hand, this is another test, on the other hand, it is a great joy that this is happening again.
